2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 1 Predictions: Western Conference

Karen M, Lily L, Sam K, Becky D & Kathryn P share their predictions for round one in the Western Conference (yes, the Western Conference does actually exist. No, it is not some figment of Gary Bettman’s imagination). Please be sure to tell us how brilliant/stupid we are in the comments.

#1 Vancouver Canucks vs. #8 Los Angeles Kings

Karen M:
Who will win: Canucks in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Kings

The Kings have been scrapping to makes the playoffs & score goals since Daryl Sutter took over in December and I don’t think they’ll have enough left in the tank to beat the Presidents’ Trophy cursed winning Canucks.

Speaking of the Canucks, there is a lot of talk of Daniel Sedin returning from his Duncan Keith-asshattery induced concussion for round 1 (though he has definitely been ruled out for Thursday). After seeing the way the Kings targeted Logan Couture in the final two games of the regular season though, I’m seriously concerned about Daniel getting hurt again. As a Blackhawks fan I always root against the Canucks, but I *never* root for them to be injured. (In fact, every time I see the Sedin twins “Because it’s the Cup” Ad I wince and feel guilty. It’s very annoying.)

Lily L:
Who will win: Canucks in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Kings

The Kings have recently learned how to score goals again, which is good for them, but now they’re going up against the Nucks, which isn’t. Quick will probably steal them a game and Luongo being Luongo will likely help the Kings a bit too, but in the end I expect the Nucks to have something to prove after last year’s Cup loss.

Sam K:
Who will win: Canucks in 5 or 6
Who I’m rooting for: Kings

Kings will take a game or two, but overall this will be on the Canucks, I guess. Which is sad, because Kings could make a good case for themselves…

Becky D:
Who will win: Canucks in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Kings

As much as it pains me to say this (and when I say pain I mean it, though that could also be the wonky looking ham I ate yesterday) the Nucks are going to take this one in the opinion of just about everyone in the world, including me. I’ll give the Kings two wins, though, and the Nucks a whole heckuva lot of bruises which will be nice for whoever faces them in round two (please be the Blackhawks please be the Blackhawks please be the Blackhawks).

Additional prediction: Mike Richards and Jeff Carter hold each other while openly weeping on the ice before the handshake line.

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Canucks in whatever
Who I’m rooting for: *blinks* Sorry, did you say something?

#2 St. Louis Blues vs. #7 San Jose Sharks

Karen M:
Who will win: Blues in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Sharks

I’ve always liked the Sharks, especially Logan Couture & Antti Niemi (who’s Blackhawks jersey is hanging in my closet right now as an awesome reminder of a time when I was earning a healthy salary and could drop $200 without really thinking things through.)

Anyhoo, the Sharks have been inconsistent all season and for a while there it looked like they were destined for 9th. They’ve picked their game up lately while the Blues have been struggling but I think the Blues will take it in the end.

Dramatic narrative to watch- David Perron vs the man who cost him a year, Joe Thorton.

Lily L:
Who will win: Blues in 4 or 5
Who I’m rooting for: Blues

Blues … I have nothing else to say here. They’re just going to get this one, is all.

Sam K:
Who will win: Blues in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Blues

While it would be interesting to have the Sharks advance, I kind of find myself cheering for the Blues here for no reason. Gut feeling?

Becky D:
Who will win: Blues in 5
Who I’m rooting for: Sharks

Not a lot of luck for the teams from Cali this year. The Blues are likely going to take this series when Elliott stands on his freaking head (literally, he’s been working on the technique in practice all year and no one has managed to score a goal on him, though that’s probably because he had Halak on top of him in some freaky Cirque du Soleil routine). I’m not sure they’ll be completely swept, though, because it’s really, really hard to sweep the Sharks in a playoff series.

*crickets noise*

So, Blues in 5. And Clowe takes his bench antics to all new levels when he’s actually awarded the game winning overtime goal in the Sharks lone win while sitting next to Jumbo Joe on the bench, laughing their butts off.

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Blues in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Eene, meene, mine, mo…the Blues, because I think they’ll win and then I’ll feel validated and won’t have to be angry.

I predict a hard-fought series with the Sharks giving the Blues a run for their money, but ultimately losing it in game 6. Who am I kidding, I have no idea.

#3 Phoenix Coyotes vs. #6 Chicago Blackhawks

Karen M:
Who will win: Hawks in 7
Who I’m rooting for: THE MIGHTY BLACKHAWKS

Who’s afraid of Mike Smith? Anyone who’s been paying attention. See also, Radim Vrbata. What the Yotes lack in star power, they make up with a solid team game. The Blackhawks have been inconsistent this year but the addition of Johnny Oduya to the blue line has been nothing short of miraculous and Crawford is finally getting his game back on track. I think the Blackhawks make it through, but if they don’t, I’m sure the abysmal special teams will be to blame.

Additional prediction: With an eerie similarity to last spring, Raffi Torres demolishes one of our pesky rookies (Andrew Shaw or Marcus Kruger) with a borderline hit & it rallies the Blackhawks

Lily L:
Who will win: Hawks in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Hawks

Smith, like Quick, will likely steal a game or two, but I doubt even having him in net will be enough to get the Yotes past the Hawks.

Sam K:
Who will win: Blackhawks in 6 or 7
Who I’m rooting for: Undecided?

Both teams have made a case for themselves, the Coyotes have won 3 of their 4 matchups this season despite the Hawks playing in the tougher division. On the other hand, the Coyotes have clinched their division and the Blackhawks will be back at full strength presumably. It’s tough, but my guess is the Blackhawks will prevail in this one.

Considering this – as always – may be the last series the Coyotes play in Phoenix, part of me wants them to win it.

Becky D:
Who will win: Hawks in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Hawks

Words Becky never thought she’d say out loud: Mike Smith terrifies me. On the upside, not many other people on the Yotes do the same. Except Vrbata. I have a feeling I’m going to want to punch him repeatedly in the face by the end of this series. One that’s got the potential to go all seven but that, for my own sanity, hopefully won’t.

Jonathan Toews makes his triumphant return and scores eighteen goals in one game.

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Blackhawks in 6 or 7
Who I’m rooting for: HAWKS!

Knowing the Blackhawks, they won’t make it easy for themselves or my psychological and emotional well being, so they’ll let the Coyotes snag a couple wins. 6 or 7 games for them and 1 minor meltdown for me.

Getting Toews back in the lineup could be the boost the Hawks need. Or the exact opposite. They seem to rally better when one of them gets injured. I for one hope that’s not necessary this year.

#4 Nashville Predators vs. #5 Detroit Red Wings

Karen M:
Who will win: Preds in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Preds

I should probably root for the Wings since they are a better match up for the Blackhawks, but I’d feel bad for David Poile if he’s pushed all his chips in to the center of the table and busts on the first hand. Also, Shea Weber’s awesome beard of awesome needs to exist to in the universe to compensate for guys like Patrick ‘Sabertooth’ Kane & Jonathan ‘Victorian Vampire’ Toews.

The Red Wings are the Red Wings so they aren’t rolling over, especially since Lidstrom’s robot batteries have recently been recharged & Datsyuk is Datsyuk.

Lily L:
Who will win: Preds in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Preds

Wings have really not looked themselves as of late and, while injuries were no doubt a factor, I see the Preds getting past them this year.

Plus, I really just want to see if Shea Weber’s beard will eventually gain sentience and eat someone.

Sam K:
Who will win: Wings in 5
Who I’m rooting for: Preds

Short story, Wings are more experienced and know how to deal, Preds still need to gather experience in the postseason.

Becky D:
Who will win: Preds in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Preds

I know the common practice in hockey in the last two decades has been to say THE DETROIT RED WINGS WIN, even if they’re just curling, but I haven’t been able to shake the feeling all year that the Preds are making it to the finals this time around. Shea Weber’s beard will no longer be denied!

It’ll take them 7 games though, because they’re still playing against Datsyuk and the T-1000 formerly known as Nicklas Lidstrom.

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Red Wings in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Shea Weber’s playoff beard. I want to see that after round 1. Hence the Predators.

I’d guess this will be pretty close, too. Probably. Mainly, I’m realizing I need to stop living under a rock (also known as The Time Zone That Sucks across the big ocean) and watch more hockey. Who needs sleep?

  1. naturally like your website however you have to check the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling issues and I in finding it very bothersome to tell the truth then again I’ll certainly come again again.
