2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 1 Predictions: Eastern Conference

A hockey blog just wouldn’t be complete without playoff predictions! Karen M, Lily L, Becky D and Sam K share their Round 1 Eastern Conference predictions and who they’ll be rooting for. Let us know how brilliant/stupid we are in the comments!

ETA: Kathryn P’s predictions :)

#1 New York Rangers vs #8 Ottawa Senators

Karen M:
Who will win: Rangers in 5
Who I’m rooting for: Rangers, because Callahan is my second favorite captain

Both teams have struggled down the stretch, but the Rangers are the better team. If the Rangers try to look past the Sens though they’ll lose a game. Once Torts is done screaming the Rangers will close out the series.

Lily L:
Who will win: Rangers in 5
Who I’m rooting for: Sens

I just don’t see the Rangers letting an upset happen this early on, and the Sens have skidded so much lately that I think it’d take a miracle for them to pull off a series win. Frankly, I don’t expect them to give the Rangers much trouble.

Sam K:
Who will win: Rangers in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Undecided

Usually I’d guess this is a no brainer with the Rangers dominating the East the way they have, but their track record against the Sens isn’t the best… And Ottawa will be crummy in this one, so I expect them to take two games at the very least.

Becky D:
Who will win: Rags in 5, because there’s always a chance the Sens squeak one through.
Who I’m rooting for: Rangers

Does this one even require a pick? Seriously? If it had been the Caps I might have thought there’d be a bit of a struggle, but the Sens? C’mon! *is a huffy Leafs fan*

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Rangers in 4
Who I’m rooting for:Rangers

Rooting Rangers partially because the guy I watch hockey with most of the time now, is a Rangers fan and the mood’s just going to be better that way ;-) Also because of Ryan Callahan’s grandma.

The Rangers have had a pretty outstanding season and so far haven’t lost a game I watched. So if I manage to stay up late lots (I’m in Europe), this should be over in 4.

#2 Boston Bruins vs. #7 Washington Capitals

Karen M:
Who will win: Bruins in 4
Who I’m rooting for: Ugh. Caps, I guess.

(Full disclosure- I was rooting for the Caps to miss the playoffs & I’m not a fan of the Bruins unless they are beating the Canucks.) Bruins have been erratic this spring but Hunter’s Caps just look lost most of the time.

Lily L:
Who will win: Bruins in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Caps

Caps have been heating up lately, but I don’t think it’s enough. They’ll probably steal a couple of games, but I suspect the Bruins will knock ‘em out.

Sam K:
Who will win: Bruins in anywhere from 4 to 7
Who I’m rooting for: Caps

This is a hard one. When the Caps really put their grind behind their game they could take this series, but I’m not sure they’d deserve it, considering their play during the regular season. Meanwhile, the Bruins have received a beating from the Caps more than once this past season, so things are open for a sweep up until a 7 game crunch.

Becky D:
Who will win: Bruins in 4, because I feel like someone needs to sweep this year and Thomas won’t want to spend one more minute in Washington than he has to (zing!).
Who I’m rooting for: Bruins (but only because I’m rooting *against* the Caps)

I can’t imagine a world where the Bruins don’t win this series. Which is weird because I can imagine worlds where donuts rain down from the sky and the Simpsons live in a mansion but this? Nope. Sorry. Not this year. This smells remarkably like another first round bouncy house for the Caps.

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Bruins
Who I’m rooting for: Undecided

Not getting excited about either team because I plan for the Rangers to eliminate whoever wins this series in round 2.

#3 Florida Panthers vs #6 New Jersey Devils

Karen M:
Who will win: NJD (obviously) in 5
Who I’m rooting for: Panthers!

As a Blackhawks fan how can I *not* be rooting for Dale Tallon’s merry band of misfit toys? Unfortunately, the Advanced Stats guys are right and this team ain’t making it out of round 1. I think they avoid the sweep only because the Devils underestimate them.

Looking forward to twitter chirping my favorite NDJ fans @Jonathan_Dunphy & @batmaneatsbabie or, I guess them chirping me and me being thankful I haven’t been a Panthers fan since 1996.

Lily L:
Who will win: Devils in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Panthers

Cats have been so up and down this season that, as much as I’d like their underdog story to continue, I think they’ll have trouble when they meet the Devils. Unless Kovalchuk, Elias and Parise all forget how to score goals at the same time again. Possible, yet unlikely.

Sam K:
Who will win: Devils in 5
Who I’m rooting for: Devils

I have an obligation as a friend to a Devils fan?

Becky D:
Who will win: Devils in 6
Who I’m rooting for: Panthers

I know no one cares about this series. It’s like that year the Cardinals won the World Series over the Rangers and everyone would’ve rather watched American Idol. But I for one am stoked to see the Panthers first playoff series in over a decade. And no, I’m not bitter that the Leafs now have the longest playoff drought. Nope. Not at all. Anyways!

Devils (sadly) with take this in 6, though, because as much as I love the Blackhawks South, I don’t think they’ve got it in them to go any further this year, and the Devils have been sneaky good lately (sneaky because no one actually, y’know, watches them enough to realize this fact).

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Panthers; because I say so. Nobody said I had to be super realistic here.
Who I’m rooting for: Panthers

Rooting Panthers because any team that plays most of its home games with an away crowd deserves this and because I won’t support a team from Jersey in protest of their road system.

If my prediction is wrong, so what. If I’m right I can rub in everyone’s face that “I told you so.” :-)

#4 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #5 Philadelphia Flyers

Karen M:
Who will win: Flyers in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Flyers; no fatalities

The Pens have the edge but this Flyers team is crazy resilient. I’m the only one of the crew here who roots for the Flyers so if you follow us on twitter THERE WILL BE CHIRPS!

Lily L:
Who will win: Flyers in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Pens

Pens vs Flyers is going to be a knock down, drag out, hair pulling, biting, fist throwing mess. I see this one going to seven because neither team is going to want to back off, but I think the Flyers also have a bit more confidence when it comes to this particular match-up than the Pens do and that’s going to be important here. It’s also going to make me cry, but that’s another story.

Sam K:
Who will win: Flyers in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Pens

All. Out. War. That is all I can say.

Becky D:
Who will win: Pens in 7
Who I’m rooting for: Pens

This. One. Is. Going. To. Be. A. Bloodbath. And. I. Will. Be. Glued. To. My. TV. Screen. For. Every. Minute. Of. It.

Pens in 7, because even though the Flyers are their kryptonite, I really think the Pens could win the Cup this year and if that means slugging their way through the Flyers, I gotta imagine they can do it. Everything else after this, though, will be a cakewalk.

And I just realized that I’m the only one here that actually thinks the Pens will win. Which means I’m either terribly naive, or an evil genius! I’m voting for evil genius.

Kathryn P:
Who will win: Shamelessly taking my cue from recent games here, I have to say the Flyers will be sweeping the series.
Who I’m rooting for: Pens; because it’s not the Playoffs if you don’t spend at least half your days aggravated and swearing.

I have lost faith in the Pens after last year. But at least this time I won’t be attending my first ever Playoff game, thinking “We’re gonna sweep them on home ice tonight and get to round 2.” Cause that worked out so well…

Unless… and you never know, the Pens have been working on an elaborate plan all season to deceive not only the Flyers, but also their fans in an effort to raise the emotional impact of round 1. They could, in fact, have been winning all along, but chose not to. In that case the Flyers don’t stand a chance.

In any case, this is what the series is gonna look like:

..and Pierre was both terrified & strangely aroused.

and I’m now taking bets on which coach will win that fight.

  1. Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my four year previous daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you place this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab within and it pinched her ear. She by no means wants to go back! LoL I know this really is completely off subject but I needed to inform somebody!
